USAF HIGH FREQUENCY GLOBAL COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM (HF-GCS) |
|
The HF-GCS is a worldwide network of 15 high-power HF stations
providing air/ground HF command and control radio communications between ground agencies and US military aircraft and ships. The HF-GCS is not dedicated to any service or command, but supports all DoD authorized users on a traffic precedence/priority basis. General services provided by the HF-GCS are: |
- General Phone Patch and Message Relay Services
- Automatic Link Establishment (ALE)
- HF Data Support
- Command and Control Mission Following
- Emergency Assistance
- Broadcasts
- HF Direction Finding Assistance
- ATC Support
- E-Mail connectivity to NIPRNeT and SPIRNeT
DETAILED PROCEDURES
HF-GCS stations operate on “core” frequencies to provide increased "Global" coverage.
The published frequency listing does not reflect complete system frequency authorizations.
These published frequencies will be used for initial contact, EAM broadcasts,
and short term C2 phone patch and message delivery. Other extended or special services will be
moved to each station’s available "discrete" frequencies.
Primary HF-GCS Frequencies - 24 hours 8992 11175
Back up HF-GCS Frequencies - DAY 13200 15016
Back up HF-GCS Frequencies - NIGHT 4724 6739
The Air Force Eastern Test Range (AFETR) HF Network may be used as a backup to GLOBAL. They
may be contacted on USB 10780 (primary) and 20390 (secondary). Call sign is CAPE RADIO.

Due to the inherent line of sight limitations of VHF radio equipment when used for communications in international oceanic airspace, those aircraft operating on an IFR or controlled VFR flight plan beyond the communications capability of VHF will be required to maintain a continuous listening watch and communications capability on the assigned HF frequencies. Although these frequencies will be designated by Air Traffic Control, actual communication will be with general purpose facilities such as international flight service stations or Aeronautical Radio, Inc. (ARINC). These facilities will be responsible for the relay of position reports and other pertinent information between the aircraft and Air Traffic Control.
FAA INTERNATIONAL FLIGHT INFORMATION MANUAL
Aeronautical Radio, Inc operates the International Air/Ground Voice Service. It provides Air Traffic Control (ATC) radio communication services for the FAA in areas beyond the coverage of VHF and UHF radios.
ATC radio traffic usually consists of position reports and SELCAL checks. ARINC operators relay requests for altitude and course changes to FAA controllers, when clearance is approved the ARINC operator will call the aircraft with the FAA assigned flight level, etc. Aircraft inbound the U.S. west coast are assigned an ARTCC VHF frequency when they are at approximately 128 degrees longitude.
Airliners and military aircraft can be heard here. REACH is a
common callsign heard, this is used by USAF Air Mobility Command. Navy aircraft
usually id with tail codes, RS, RC, etc. Globemaster has a nice
tail code search.
Major World Air Route Area (MWARA) frequencies are used for
this service. Below are the Central East Pacific, South Pacific and North Pacific MWARA
frequencies, station callsign is SAN FRANCISCO.
Aircraft departing the northwest U.S. on long range flights contact SAN FRANCISCO on
ARINC frequencies 129.4 MHz and 129.85 MHz to obtain primary and secondary HF frequencies.
The ARINC VHF network has over 100 stations along major air routes, these are
the frequencies used in the U.S.:
128.900 129.350 129.400 129.450 129.850 129.900 130.200

|
Central East Pacific One 3413 3452 5574 6673 8843 10057 13354 Central East Pacific Two South Pacific North Pacific |
ARINC also provides Aeronautical Operational Control (AOC) communications for airlines. Radio traffic includes phone patches between flight crews and company ground operations. These communications are handled by ARINC staffed Long Distance Operational Control Facilities (LDOCF) at San Francisco, New York and contract stations at Cedar Rapids, Iowa (staffed by Collins Radio personnel), Houston, Texas (staffed by Universal Weather personnel), and Miami, Florida (staffed by Silvair, Inc.). The frequencies below are monitored by ARINC 24 hours a day.
